What Is The Difference Between 3G And 4G?

What is the difference between 3g and 4g?

“G” stands for “generation” as in 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation, etc. Each new generation of cell phone technology is able to upload and download significantly more data (faster throughput) than the previous generation.

Increased speed is accomplished one of two ways. The first is through increasing the size of the portals. The second way is by designing new ways to compress and/or send the digital data by either increased compression of the packets of 1’s & 0’s or by designing better ways to send them.

The following 3G vs 4G table gives an idea of what 4G provides:

Technology 3G 4G Frequency band 1.8 – 2.5GHz 2 – 8GHz Bandwidth 5-20MHz 5-20MHz
Data rate Up to 2Mbps 100Mbps moving – 1Gbps stationary Access W-CDMA VSF-OFCDM and VSF-CDMA FEC Turbo-codes Concatenated codes Switching Circuit/Packet Packet

Example: There never would have been an iPhone without the 3rd generation technology. If you just cannot get enough information, refer to the detailed explanation of “generation” differences from Farpoint Group’s demo at Telecombooksblog.com.
